Overview

Founded by decree of Emperor Meiji as guardian of the frontier. Barely 150 years old, yet no shrine in Hokkaido draws more worshippers. It enshrines the three deities of land development.

Founding and the change of name

The founding of Hokkaido Jingu is tied to the Meiji government's development of Hokkaido. According to the shrine's official history, a ceremony to enshrine the deities of Hokkaido was held in Tokyo in 1869, and three deities were enshrined as guardians of the development. Knowing how it was founded lets you see the precinct not merely as a tourist sight but as a place that tells the story of how modern Sapporo took shape. In 1964 Emperor Meiji was enshrined alongside them, and the shrine's name was changed to Hokkaido Jingu.

The enshrined deities and how to read them

The three Development Deities recorded in the official history are Okunitama no Kami, Onamuji no Kami and Sukunahikona no Kami. The present roster of enshrined deities also includes Emperor Meiji. Reading the shrine's founding history, its deities and the change of its name separately helps keep the explanation of the faith distinct from events of modern history. The history given here is based on the shrine's own published account and does not guarantee the effect of any prayer.
