Overview
Wooden arcades built out over the street against snow, surviving as they were in the Edo period.
About this place
Nakamachi Komise-dori is an arcade-like passage in Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture, that has continued since the early Edo period; it is said that no other example survives in such a complete form anywhere in Japan. Its administrative route name is Kuroishi City Road Maemachi-Nozoe Line. It is a street where a board-ceilinged, eave-like roof, which shields against winter snowfall and summer sun, is carried on wooden posts lined up along the road side, called 'komise'.
