About this place
Tsugaru lacquerware is traditional lacquerware produced in the Tsugaru region. Since 1873 (Meiji 6) it has been called Tsugaru-nuri. It is also called Kara-nuri. It was selected as a Traditional Craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1975, and in 2017 was designated a National Important Intangible Cultural Property. It is said to have begun in the middle of the Edo period, when Tsugaru Nobumasa, the fourth lord of the Hirosaki domain, invited many craftsmen and engineers from all over the country to Hirosaki to foster Tsugaru's industries and took into his service the lacquerer Ikeda Genbei, from Wakasa Province.
