About this place
Ishidoji is a temple of the Tendai school in Minamiboso, Chiba Prefecture. Its mountain name is Choanzan. Its subtemple name is Tokoin. The principal image is Eleven-Headed Kannon Bosatsu. Tradition says it was founded by Gyoki in 726 (3rd year of Jinki). It is also said to have been founded in 708 (1st year of Wado) by the Nara monks Emyo and Tosho and revived by Ennin (Jikaku Daishi) in 851-854 (Ninju era), but how far these accounts convey historical fact is uncertain.
