The temple of the tanuki drumming song; its badger statues have made a folktale into a local emblem.
About this place
Shojoji is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji school in Fujimi 2-chome, Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture. Its mountain name is Gonenzan. The legend "Tanuki Bayashi" handed down at the temple is counted as one of Japan's Three Great Tanuki Legends. Based on this legend, the children's song "Shojoji no Tanuki Bayashi" was written and composed. On the grounds there is a "Tanuki Bayashi Children's Song Memorial Monument" and other items, and every autumn a Tanuki Festival is held as a memorial service for tanuki. The children's song title uses a different character for "jo" and is written as Shojoji, but this is incorrect as an address.
