About this place
Tojotei is a villa built by Tokugawa Akitake, the last (11th) lord of the Mito Domain, at Matsudo, Matsudo Town, Higashikatsushika District, Chiba Prefecture (now Matsudo). It is one of the Important Cultural Properties of Japan, with the designated name Former Tokugawa Family Residence Matsudo Tojotei. The garden is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan as the Former Tokugawa Akitake Garden (Tojotei Garden). It has also been selected as one of the Kanto Fuji-mi Hyakkei (100 views of Mount Fuji in Kanto). In the Edo period, Matsudo-juku was a post town on the Mito Kaido connecting Edo and Mito.
