Seven and a half centuries of tile-making, smoked at the end until silver; its demon tiles are the tiler's sculpture.
About this place
Kikuma kawara is roof tile produced in the Kikuma district of Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. Onigawara (ridge-end tiles) are also produced. It is a blend of 60% Sanuki clay from Kagawa Prefecture and 40% Gomi clay from Kikumacho. The raw clays that are mixed differ in grain size, mineral structure, moisture content (stickiness) and composition, so to make a stable raw clay they are further crushed by machine, given moderate moisture and kneaded together.
