About this place
Garyu Sanso is a mountain villa in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture. The garden is a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. In 1897 it was purchased by Kawachi Torajiro, a trader from Ozu who had succeeded in exporting wood wax; with the tea-house architect Yagi Jinbei of Kyoto as adviser and Nakano Torao, a master carpenter from a line of carpenters of the Ozu Domain's construction office, in charge of building, the project took 10 years of planning, 4 years of construction and 9,000 workers in total, and was completed in 1907 (Meiji 40).
