Overview
Three thousand wells rise of their own pressure through the town - water built into the streets themselves.
About this place
Uchinuki are free-flowing artesian wells of groundwater, abundant throughout the former Saijo, Saijo, Ehime Prefecture. In 1985 (Showa 60), they were also selected as one of the 100 Selected Famous Waters by the Environment Agency. Saijo, at the foot of the Ishizuchi mountain range, has deep hollows underground and a vast aquifer, and the underground along the Kamo River flowing through the center of the city is surrounded by clay layers, so strong pressure is constantly applied to the groundwater. Thanks to this, groundwater has been abundant since ancient times, making it a rare artesian groundwater zone even in Japan.
