About this place
Sakurai lacquerware is lacquerware made in the Sakurai area of Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. There is a record that it was made in 1828 (11th year of Bunsei); at first it was made by the Shunkei-nuri technique, but in the Tenpo era a technique of joining the corners of tiered food boxes in a comb-tooth shape was perfected, and it became known nationwide. It is designated an Ehime Prefecture traditional craft. From the end of the Edo period to before the war, Sakurai lacquerware was peddled and sold in Kyushu and elsewhere by local Sakurai merchants.
