About this place
Uwacho Unomachi is an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Seiyo, Ehime Prefecture. Unomachi is the center of the Uwa district of the city and prospered in the domain era as a rural market town of the Uwajima Domain. In the Sengoku period this land was under the rule of the Iyo Saionji clan. The Saionji clan had Matsuba Castle, on a mountain north of the district, as its residence, and Unomachi was originally the castle town of Matsuba Castle. The Saionji clan later moved its residence to Kurose Castle on a mountain across the Hiji River (south of the district), but Unomachi continued as a castle town.
