About this place
Aizu momen is a cotton fabric handed down in Aizu District, Mutsu Province (now western Fukushima Prefecture). It is a traditional craft designated by Fukushima Prefecture. A sturdy plain-weave cotton cloth, it was long widely worn as work clothes for the fields and the like. Originally the common type had white stripes woven on a navy ground, but today striped patterns in various colours such as red and green are woven. It has a thick, soft texture and shrinks less than ordinary plain-weave cotton, so it even withstands washing at home.
