Overview
An 1883 district office in pseudo-Western style, showing how provincial officialdom absorbed the West.
About this place
The former Date District Office is an early Meiji-period Western-style government building remaining in Koori, Date District, Fukushima Prefecture. The district office of Date District was established in Hobara in 1879, but was moved to Koori in April 1883 (Meiji 16) as a result of a campaign by local volunteers in Koori. The newly built office at that time is the building of the former Date District Office that remains today. For about 43 years until it was abolished, it played a central role in district administration, and even after abolition it was used as a local office of the prefecture, until it finished that role in March 1974.
