About this place
The Asaka Canal is a canal that draws water from Lake Inawashiro and supplies agricultural, industrial and drinking water to the Asaka plain in and around Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture. It is also used for hydroelectric power. It was part of the Asaka development and was initially called the Lake Inawashiro Canal. It is counted as one of Japan's Three Great Canals, along with the Nasu Canal (Nasunogahara, Tochigi Prefecture) and the Lake Biwa Canal (Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, to Kyoto). It has been selected as a Civil Engineering Heritage Site by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, a Japan Heritage site and an Irrigation Facilities Heritage site.
