About this place
Soma Komayaki is pottery produced in the Soma region of Fukushima Prefecture. It is also called Soma-yaki, Koma-yaki and Tashiro Komayaki. Mostly tea utensils, it is characterized by its distinctive crackle glaze and designs of a running horse. In 1648 (1st year of Keian), the potter Tashiro Gengoemon (later renamed Seijiemon), who had trained under Ninsei in Kyoto, opened a kiln in Nakamura, Soma District (now Soma). Thereafter it was generously protected as the official kiln of the Soma Domain. The kiln is open to the public as the Tashiro Komayaki Climbing Kiln, a Fukushima Prefecture Designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, but Soma Komayaki is not currently being made.
