About this place
The Soma Nomaoi is a festival of the three Myoken shrines, Soma Nakamura Shrine, Soma Ota Shrine and Soma Odaka Shrine, held in the northern Hamadori area of Fukushima Prefecture, beginning with the Nakamura district of Soma (the former territory of the Soma clan, the Nakamura domain under the domain system). It consists of Shinto rituals such as the Nomakake (horse chasing), the armoured horse race and the sacred flag contest held at the Hibarigahara festival ground in Haramachi Ward, Minamisoma, and the Ogyoretsu procession of mounted warriors through the town. These rituals were designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1952.
