About this place
Kiryu-ori is a silk fabric that is a speciality of Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture. Its origins go back to the Nara period. From the Edo period it developed by introducing techniques from Nishijin and the West, and was a pioneer in introducing manufactories (factory-based handicraft industry). Said to be "Nishijin in the west, Kiryu in the east," it flourished as a key industry of Japan, centred on high-grade fabrics, until the early Showa period.
