About this place
Kiryu Shinmachi was a town in Yamada District, Kozuke Province (Gunma Prefecture). It corresponds to present-day Honmachi and Yokoyamacho in Kiryu. A wide variety of buildings remain, including merchant houses, storehouses and sawtooth-roofed textile factories, and it has been selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. On 24 April 2015 it was also certified as a Japan Heritage site as a component of "Kakaa Denka: Gunma's Silk Story."
