About this place
Rinkokaku is a modern Japanese-style guesthouse facility in Otemachi, Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. The main building, annex and tea house are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. It was completed in September 1884 (Meiji 17). Prompted by a proposal from Katori Motohiko, then governor of Gunma Prefecture, with land donated by Shimomura Zentaro and funds raised by Maebashi companies and local volunteers, it was built as a guesthouse. The construction cost was about 5,000 yen. At first it was not municipal property but was operated by an organization of the townspeople who had made donations.
