Overview
A wool company's pseudo-Western office of 1910, a relic of Gunma's textile industry.
About this place
Jomo Muslin Co., Ltd. was a company that ran a textile business mainly in Tatebayashi, Gunma Prefecture, in the Meiji and Taisho periods. Along with Tatebayashi Flour Milling (the predecessor of Nisshin Flour Milling), it contributed to the modernization of Tatebayashi and appears in the works of the novelist Tayama Katai, a native of Tatebayashi, but under the influence of the Taisho bubble it fell prey to the chaotic management of speculative capitalists and failed. As its name suggests, its business was weaving muslin. Muslin in Japan is a thin woolen fabric using worsted yarn, which was imported in large quantities in the early Meiji period.
