About this place
Kumano brushes (English: Kumano Brush, Kumanofude) are brushes made in Kumano, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture. A Traditional Craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. A collective trademark managed by the production area cooperative, the Kumano Brush Business Cooperative Association. It is Japan's largest production area, known as the "capital of brushes," and together with Toyohashi brushes (Aichi Prefecture), Nara brushes (Nara Prefecture) and Kawajiri brushes (Hiroshima Prefecture) forms Japan's four major production areas. It is generally said to hold an 80 percent share of the domestic market, and with Kawajiri brushes added, Hiroshima Prefecture's share of the domestic market is 90 percent.
