A timber Western hall on the slope above the port; its original furniture and blue-and-yellow colour scheme show what the trade was worth.
About this place
The Former Hakodate Public Hall is a historic building in Motomachi, Hakodate, Hokkaido. A colonial-style Western building completed in 1910 (Meiji 43; designed by Konishi Asajiro), it is designated a National Important Cultural Property. The Great Fire of Hakodate on August 25, 1907 (Meiji 40) destroyed the Tomiokacho town hall and the Chamber of Commerce. Okamoto Chuzo and other volunteers launched a plan to build a new meeting hall and formed the 'Public Hall Construction Council'.
