Overview
The province's central art museum, known for holding the Ecole de Paris painter Pascin in depth, alongside Hokkaido artists and studio glass.
The pillars of the collection
The Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art collects works along several axes: not only art associated with Hokkaido, but also Japanese modern art, the Ecole de Paris centered on Pascin, and glass crafts from Japan and abroad. A distinguishing feature is that regional art and expression from abroad can be considered side by side, and understanding deepens if you learn the collecting policy before viewing the exhibitions, rather than going only for a single artist.

The museum's official explanation links the hardness of glass and its property of transmitting light with the images of Hokkaido's winter, snow and ice. This affinity with the local climate was the reason it was chosen as a collecting field. The collection includes Japanese modern, European modern and world contemporary glass. By comparing color, transparency and surface decoration, you can read both the shared nature of the material and differences in form.
