About this place
Awaji Kawara is clay roof tile produced on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. It is one of the "Three Great Kawara of Japan," along with Sanshu kawara and Sekishu kawara. Production areas are Tsui, Matsuho, Aman and other places in Minamiawaji. The former Nishiawaji Town is said to be blessed with good-quality clay as a raw material for tile. Today there are about 70 tile manufacturers on Awaji Island. It is mainly ibushi tile, characterized by a beautiful silver sheen, and its output of ibushi tile is the largest in Japan. Besides ibushi tile, glazed tile (ceramic tile) and unglazed tile are produced, and in shape, Japanese-style and F-type as well as many other shapes.
