Overview
Stairs descend through the middle of a lotus pond into a hall beneath the water, its vermilion interior filled by the setting sun.
About this place
Honpukuji is a Shingon esoteric temple in Awaji, Hyogo Prefecture, and a special head temple of the Omuro branch of Shingon Buddhism. Founded in the late Heian period, its principal image, the Yakushi Nyorai statue, is designated an Important Cultural Property of Awaji (formerly Higashiura). What is unique about this temple is its main hall, called the "Mizu-no-Midou" (Water Temple), a reinforced concrete temple building designed by Tadao Ando and completed in 1991. Instead of the large roof that symbolises power, there is a water basin in which lotus flowers bloom, and the structure is entered through it.
