About this place
The Ikuno Silver Mine was a mine that formerly stood in Ikuno, Asago District (now Asago), Hyogo Prefecture. It was the model mine first made state-run (directly managed) by the new Meiji government to establish the modernisation of Japan's mining industry (mines and smelters), and is regarded as one of Japan's leading silver mines. On 22 March 1973 it closed because of the decline in ore quality caused by resource depletion, rising mining costs and other reasons. In 1974 the historic site Ikuno Silver Mine opened as a tourist facility where visitors can tour the tunnels.
