Overview
A basket in the 8th-century Shosoin is said to come from here; willow weaving later made this Japan's luggage capital.
About this place
Toyooka kiryu work is a woodcraft made in and around Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, using koriyanagi (Salix koriyanagi) willow and rattan, and is a traditional craft of Japan (a craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry). It is registered as a regional collective trademark by the Patent Office. It was once also produced in Yabu and Kami, Mikata District, and at its peak, koriyanagi was grown and kiryu work produced throughout Japan.
