About this place
Kanazawa lacquerware is lacquerware produced in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. In the Edo period the Kaga Domain promoted art and crafts, and a workshop was established in the time of Maeda Toshitsune. The domain invited master craftsmen such as Igarashi Doho from Kyoto and Shimizu Kyubei from Edo, and many artisans were trained. In 1899 (Meiji 32) the Kanazawa Lacquerware Trade Association was established, and exports to China, India and Europe flourished. In 1980 (Showa 55) it was designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
