About this place
Yamanaka-nuri is lacquerware produced in the Yamanaka district of Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture. Also called Yamanaka lacquerware. Its history can be traced back to the Tensho era (1573-1592). Records from the Meiwa era (1764-1771) are also found. At first it consisted mainly of souvenirs for hot spring guests at Yamanaka Onsen and output was small, but in the Horeki era of the late Edo period, chestnut-colored lacquer, which later became "shutame-nuri," was introduced.
