About this place
Joboji lacquer is raw lacquer (urushi) collected from lacquer trees in northern Iwate, southern Aomori and northeastern Akita by lacquer tappers based mainly in Joboji, Ninohe, Iwate Prefecture. In the 21st century, more than 98% of the lacquer used in Japan is cheaper Chinese lacquer, but Joboji lacquer has the largest output among Japanese lacquers, accounting for about 70% of domestic lacquer, and is proud of its high quality.
