About this place
Tendaiji is a Tendai temple in Joboji, Ninohe, Iwate Prefecture. Its mountain name is Hachiyozan. In 1976, Kon Shuncho (the writer Kon Toko), who had been the chief priest of Chusonji, took up his post as special-appointment head priest and began restoration, resolving to make a new principal image of the Eleven-Faced Kannon (a standing statue about 4.8 m tall). Two years after his arrival he died of the colon cancer he had long suffered from. Later, in 1987, Jakucho Setouchi succeeded him as head priest (now honorary head priest) and is known for having fulfilled the responsibility of the restoration.
