Overview
A giant coin dug into the beach and re-cut by the whole town twice a year - which is why it has held its shape for four centuries.
About this place
Zenigata Sunae is a giant sand painting in the shape of a Kan'ei Tsuho coin made in the Edo period, on Ariake Beach in Kanonji, Kagawa Prefecture. Its circumference is 345 meters. The actual picture is an ellipse 122 meters long (east-west) and 90 meters wide (north-south), and from the observation deck at the summit of Kotohiki Park it looks like a perfect circle. Viewing is free, but the inside of the sand painting is a restricted area. It is lit up at night (from sunset to 10:00 p.m.).
