Anmochi Zoni

Rounds of daikon and kintoki carrot are simmered in dashi made from dried sardines, round mochi filled with bean paste and tofu are added, and white miso is stirred in. Finished with a sprinkle of aonori.

Shoyu Mame

Dried broad beans are roasted in their skins over low heat, then steeped overnight in a seasoning liquid of water, soy sauce and sugar that has been brought to a boil. Eaten skins and all.

Shippoku Udon

Daikon, carrot, taro, tofu, fried tofu and green onion are simmered together in dashi made from dried sardines, and poured with the ingredients over boiled udon. A warm udon dish.

Oshinuki-zushi

Vinegared rice and simmered vegetables are layered into a mold, topped with vinegar-cured Spanish mackerel, broad beans, rolled omelet, shrimp and snow peas, then pushed out of the mold.

Nasu Somen

Eggplant, soaked to remove its harshness, is fried in oil, then fried tofu and chili pepper are added and it is simmered in iriko (dried sardine) dashi seasoned with sugar and soy sauce. Somen noodles boiled until still firm are combined with this broth.

Manba no Kenchan

Manba leaf vegetable is boiled to remove its harshness and stir-fried with dried sardines, then tofu and fried tofu are added and broken up as they are fried, and it is simmered with dashi and seasonings.

Teppai

Fish filleted and cut into thin strips is cured with salt and vinegar, then dressed together with salt-rubbed daikon in a vinegared miso of white miso, sugar and vinegar. Green onion and chili are added.

Uchikomi-jiru

Noodles made by kneading wheat flour with water, rolling it out and cutting it are dropped into a dashi in which daikon, carrot, taro, burdock and fried tofu have been simmered, and the soup is finished with miso.

Shima no Chagayu

Rice simmered for fifteen to twenty minutes in tea brewed from goishicha or hojicha. Barley, sweet potato, broad beans or mochi are sometimes added.

Tai Somen

Salted sea bream is simmered in a broth of soy sauce, sugar, sake and mirin and arranged on a large platter, with boiled somen noodles beside it. In some areas the fish is grilled whole and served that way.

Dojo-jiru

Loach rubbed with salt to remove the sliminess is simmered with burdock, eggplant, taro and fried tofu, udon for uchikomi is added, and the soup is seasoned with miso and sake.

Shrines & Temples
Kotohira

Kotohiragu

The approach runs 785 steps to the main shrine and 1,368 to the inner one. In the Edo period, when free travel was difficult, a Konpira pilgrimage was, like a visit to Ise, an accepted pretext for a journey. There was even the konpira-inu: if you could not go yourself, you sent a dog with an offering and a tag tied to it. The wish to travel borrowed the form of faith.

Kagawa

Banana-yellow eel goes on show in Kagawa

From October 1, Shikoku Aquarium is showing a Japanese eel with yellow mottled markings all over its body. The wild eel was caught in Lake Kojima, Okayama, and is in the freshwater zone on the main building's 2nd floor.

Patagonia National Park, Chile

Women rangers return Darwin's rheas to the wild in Chile

In Chile's Patagonia National Park, a women-led ranger team returned 13 Darwin's rheas to the wild in April 2026. Working with the Rewilding Chile Foundation, they care for the birds around the clock; surveys once estimated only about 11 to 15 remained.

Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe

New 210-million-year-old dinosaur species named from Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba shore

A new dinosaur species, Musango matusadonaensis, has been described from rocks about 210 million years old in Matusadona National Park on the shore of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. The bipedal, not-yet-adult animal was about 4.5 metres long, and the find suggests Zimbabwe's dinosaur fauna differed from South Africa's.
