About this place
Tosa washi is washi made in Kochi Prefecture (formerly Tosa Province). Together with Echizen washi of Fukui Prefecture and Mino washi of Gifu Prefecture, it is counted as one of the three great washi. Since the Edo period, along with Tosa plaster and raw silk, it was called the "Three Whites of Tosa" and shipped across the country. In the narrow sense it refers to handmade washi made by "nagashi-suki" or "tame-suki" designated under the Act on the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries, but generally it is called Tosa washi including that made by machine.
