About this place
Chibusan Kofun is a decorated burial mound in Yamaga, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is designated a National Historic Site (part of the historic site "Chibusan-Obusan Kofun"). This burial mound stands on the right bank of the Iwano River, a tributary of the Kikuchi River flowing through Yamaga, at the eastern end of the Hiraoki Plateau at an elevation of about 45 meters. The surrounding area is one where many decorated burial mounds are distributed (the Jo Yokoanagun, Tsukejo Yokoanagun and Umazuka Kofun upstream). It is a keyhole-shaped mound built in the Kofun period in the early 6th century. It is now the central site of the Prefectural Fudoki no Oka.
