About this place
Godaido is a Buddhist hall in Matsushima, a scenic spot in Matsushima, Miyagi District, Miyagi Prefecture. It is an outlying Buddhist hall of Zuiganji, a Rinzai-sect Myoshinji-school temple in the same town. It is a building important to the landscape of Matsushima, one of the Three Views of Japan, and stands on a small island close to the shore of Honshu. According to tradition, it began in 807 (Daido 2) when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro built a Bishamondo during his Oshu expedition.
