Local food
What people have long eaten in this place. We collect the dishes themselves, not restaurants.
Okuzukake
Taro, carrot, burdock, shiitake, fried tofu, tofu and shredded konjac are simmered in the soaking liquid of dried shiitake and seasoned with soy sauce and salt, then Shiroishi umen noodles are added and the broth is thickened with potato starch.

Sendai zoni
Dashi is taken from grilled goby; shredded daikon and carrot are simmered in it and grilled mochi is added, topped with the grilled goby, salmon roe and Japanese parsley.

Harakomeshi
Rice is cooked in the broth left from simmering salmon with seasonings, then topped with the flaked salmon and with salmon roe seasoned in the same broth.

Zunda mochi
Edamame boiled in salted water is ground into a paste seasoned with sugar and salt, which is coated over pounded mochi.

Hattojiru
Wheat flour dough kneaded with water and rested is stretched thin by hand and torn off, then simmered in dashi with seasonal vegetables and mushrooms and seasoned with soy sauce and sake.

Hoya no Sunomono (Vinegared Sea Squirt)
Sea squirt is cut into one-centimeter pieces and arranged with salted cucumber cut in an accordion pattern, dressed with a mixture of soy sauce, vinegar and mirin, and served with ginger, myoga and green shiso.

Sasa Kamaboko no Isobeage
Sasa-kamaboko, white fish paste shaped like a bamboo leaf and grilled, is dipped in a batter of cake flour, egg and green laver and deep-fried.

Aburafu don
Deep-fried wheat gluten and long green onion are simmered in dashi, soy sauce and mirin, bound with beaten egg, placed over rice and garnished with mitsuba.

Azara
Old pickled Chinese cabbage is desalted and simmered with the trimmings of menuke rockfish, seasoned with miso and sake lees.

Fusube Mochi
Loach is grilled and ground to a powder, then stir-fried in oil with grated daikon and burdock and simmered, seasoned with soy sauce and sake, and poured over pounded mochi.

Hokki-meshi
Surf clams are boiled and steeped in a seasoning liquid; rice is cooked in that broth, the adductor muscles and mantle are mixed in, and the meat is scattered over the top.

Shiso-maki
Red miso is kneaded with sugar, walnuts, sesame and chili pepper, formed into a stick, wrapped in green shiso leaves and deep-fried.

Gyutan-yaki
Beef tongue is cut into thick slices, seasoned and grilled over charcoal. It is often served as a set meal combined with barley rice and oxtail soup.

Michi-no-Eki roadside stations
Rest facilities registered by Japan's national government. Each has parking and toilets open 24 hours, and by definition includes a facility that sells local products. This is where the making and the food of this prefecture can actually be bought.

Shiogama Jinja
Its deity is said to have taught people how to make salt. Every July a rite is still held to draw salt from seawater by the ancient method. Salt is the precondition for preserved food, so faith and the origin of the local diet sit in the same place.
Tagajo
The seat of the provincial government of Mutsu. The Tagajo stele, one of the three great ancient monuments of Japan, still stands here.
Matsushima
One of the three great views of Japan: more than 260 islands afloat in the bay. Basho is said to have found no verse for it.
Sendai City Museum
Holds the National Treasure records of the Keicho embassy to Rome, and Date Masamune's black armour.

Pokémon x Kogei exhibition comes to Tohoku History Museum with about 100 works
The Tohoku History Museum in Tagajo will host the 'Pokémon x Kogei' exhibition from October 10 to December 27. As the final stop of the touring show, the Miyagi venue will display about 100 works by 20 artists, including a new piece, the largest lineup in Japan.

In Chile's Patagonia National Park, a women-led ranger team returned 13 Darwin's rheas to the wild in April 2026. Working with the Rewilding Chile Foundation, they care for the birds around the clock; surveys once estimated only about 11 to 15 remained.

A new dinosaur species, Musango matusadonaensis, has been described from rocks about 210 million years old in Matusadona National Park on the shore of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. The bipedal, not-yet-adult animal was about 4.5 metres long, and the find suggests Zimbabwe's dinosaur fauna differed from South Africa's.
