About this place
Shiroishi washi is Japanese paper made in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. A speciality of Shiroishi since the Edo period, it was produced actively until the Meiji era. Today it is made only at the Shiroishi Washi workshop in the city. It is excellent in strength and durability and is also used for kamiko (paper clothing) and paper cloth. The raw material is kozo (paper mulberry), but there are two kinds of trees traditionally called kozo in Japan, kozo itself and kajinoki; for Shiroishi washi, the raw material is the female plant of kajinoki, a variety called toraburi.
