About this place
Naruko lacquerware is a traditional craft lacquerware produced in Naruko, Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture. It is designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Governor of Miyagi Prefecture. There is no definite record of when and how lacquerware production began in Naruko. According to the 'Tamatsukuri Onsenshi' published in 1910, Naruko lacquerware began in the Keian era (1648-1652) of the Edo period, when a lacquerer from Kii Province lacquered Naruko turned wood and sold it to bathers.
