About this place
Sendai tansu is a type of chest of drawers that has been made around Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, since the mid-19th century, the turbulent final years of the Edo period. The name became established from the Taisho era onward. Like the Iwayado tansu of Iwate Prefecture, it is made of zelkova wood lacquered and fitted with lavish metal fittings, and is described as "bold in construction."
