About this place
Tsutsujigaoka Tenmangu is a shrine in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. It is one of the Sendai Five Shrines Pilgrimage. It was founded in Yamashiro Province in 974 (Ten'en 2); later Taira no Harumasa transferred it to Uta District in Mutsu Province, then to Kawauchi Village in Shibata District, and in 1551 (Tenbun 20) it was moved to Kodawara Tamatezaki (the site of Sendai Toshogu in Aoba Ward). In 1611 (Keicho 16) a new vermilion-lacquered shrine building was built, but in 1650 (Keian 3), when Sendai Toshogu was built on the order of the Tokugawa shogunate, it was moved to the east side of its precincts.
