Overview
Resinous and water-resistant, this cedar was prized for ship timber, and the domain lived on managing its forests.
About this place
Obi cedar is cedar grown near Nichinan, in the southeast of Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region of Japan. In the Edo period, afforestation was begun by the Ito clan's Obi Domain. There are 11 representative red-line varieties (Obiaka, Arakawa, Tanoaka and others) and 5 black-line varieties (Kuro, Tosaguro, Hidarimaki and others). Because it contains a lot of resin, it has low water absorption, and being light and strong it was actively used for shipbuilding.
