Chicken nanban

Chicken is dusted with wheat flour, coated in beaten egg and deep-fried, then dipped in sweet vinegar. It is most often eaten with tartar sauce made from chopped boiled egg and onion.

Hiyajiru (cold soup)

Grilled fish is flaked and ground together with sesame and miso, then toasted over the flame, thinned with dashi and chilled. Tofu, cucumber, green shiso and myoga are added, and it is poured over barley rice.

Obiten (Fried fish cake mixed with tofu blend)

Minced paste of local fish such as flying fish or horse mackerel is ground together with firm tofu, ginger, egg, miso and brown sugar, shaped, and deep-fried in oil.

Mehikari no Karaage (Fried Greeneyes)

Mehikari greeneyes, caught in the deep waters of the Hyuga Sea, have their heads and innards removed, are seasoned with salt and pepper, dusted with wheat flour or potato starch, and deep-fried in oil. They can be eaten bones and all.

Tori Meshi

Chicken cut into thin strips is stir-fried, then simmered with slivered burdock, carrot and dried shiitake mushrooms in soy sauce and sugar until the flavor soaks in, and cooked together with the rice.

Nadofu

Tofu made by mixing boiled seasonal greens and flowers in while the curd is setting. It is cut and eaten with soy sauce, kneaded miso or yuzu miso.

Kappodori

A green bamboo tube hollowed out between the joints is packed with pre-seasoned free-range chicken together with burdock, shiitake mushrooms, carrot and garlic chives, and grilled over the fire of a sunken hearth.

Sakana-zushi (Fish Sushi)

Horse mackerel, mackerel or small sea bream are filleted, salted and marinated in vinegar, then placed on vinegared rice shaped by hand.

Nerikuri, Nettabo, Imo-mochi (Sweet Potato and Mochi Dumpling)

A sweet made by mixing steamed sweet potato and pounded rice cake together in a grinding bowl, rolling the mixture into balls and coating them with roasted soybean flour and sugar. Sweet bean paste is sometimes wrapped inside.

Sengiri Daikon (Kiriboshi Daikon) no Madaka-zuke

A pickle of shredded daikon combined with carrot, ginger, kombu, toasted dried squid, roasted soybeans and chili pepper, steeped in soy sauce, sugar and vinegar.

Kanimaki-jiru (crab miso soup)

Mitten crabs caught in rivers have the top shell removed and are ground up shell and all, then water and miso are added, the mixture is strained and heated over low heat until it sets. Grated ginger and green onion are served with it.

Shrines & Temples
Takachiho

Takachiho Jinja

Held to be the place of the descent of the heavenly grandson. From November to February each year the night kagura is performed here, village by village, in private houses and kagura lodgings. From evening until the next morning, thirty-three dances are dedicated over a single night. An Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it continues not as a spectacle but as something the village does for itself.

Women rangers return Darwin's rheas to the wild in Chile

In Chile's Patagonia National Park, a women-led ranger team returned 13 Darwin's rheas to the wild in April 2026. Working with the Rewilding Chile Foundation, they care for the birds around the clock; surveys once estimated only about 11 to 15 remained.

Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe

New 210-million-year-old dinosaur species named from Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba shore

A new dinosaur species, Musango matusadonaensis, has been described from rocks about 210 million years old in Matusadona National Park on the shore of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. The bipedal, not-yet-adult animal was about 4.5 metres long, and the find suggests Zimbabwe's dinosaur fauna differed from South Africa's.
