About this place
Takachiho Gorge is a gorge on the Gokase River at Mitai, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. A deep valley with well-developed columnar joints, located 25 km southeast of Mount Aso, its cliffs average 80 m in height and reach 100 m at the highest, continuing for 7 km from east to west. It is a V-shaped gorge formed when lava deposited by the eruptive activity (pyroclastic flows) of Mount Aso cooled rapidly and was eroded by the Gokase River.
