About this place
The Shimabara Springs are a group of more than 70 springs throughout Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture. Most of the Shimabara springs are said to have welled up naturally during the crustal movement caused by the eruption of Mount Unzen in 1792 (4th year of Kansei) (the so-called Shimabara Taihen Higo Meiwaku). Rainfall at an altitude of about 450 m to 900 m on the eastern foot of Mount Unzen flowed underground and had been welling up into Shimabara Bay, but with the collapse of Mount Mayuyama it began to well up on land. For these reasons Shimabara is rich in spring water and was called the "City of Water."
