Overview
One of the few gentry houses to survive the war intact, its walls and windbreak trees complete against the typhoons.
About this place
The Nakamura Family Residence is a historic building (private house) in Kitanakagusuku Village, Nakagami District, Okinawa Prefecture. It is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Ga clan, ancestors of the Nakamura family, were wealthy farmers who moved together with Gosamaru, an official of the Ryukyu Kingdom, when he moved from Yomitan to Nakagusuku Castle in 1440 on the order of the Shuri Royal Government, and settled nearby. After Gosamaru was destroyed by Amawari, a period of hardship continued, but around 1720 they came to be appointed jitodai (what would be called shoya, village headman, on the mainland).
