About this place
Ryukyu dance is a traditional Japanese performing art, the collective name for the distinctive dances that were artistically refined in the history and traditions of Ryukyu and Okinawa Prefecture. It is designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Ryukyu dance is broadly divided into classical dance, set to the Ryukyu classical music perfected in the Ryukyu Kingdom, and zo-odori (miscellaneous dances), created from the Meiji era onward by incorporating the customs and folk songs of ordinary people. It is danced to Ryukyu classical music centred on uta-sanshin as accompaniment, and the sanshin, koto, flute, drum and kokyu are known as accompanying instruments.
