Overview
House plots are dug a metre below the lane to duck the typhoons - the whole village sunk into the ground.
About this place
Tonaki Island (Okinawan: Tunachi /tunaci/) is an island of Okinawa Prefecture. It belongs to Tonaki Village, Shimajiri District. Originally the northern part with Nishimori and the southern part with Utaki were separate islands, but over many years sand accumulated between them and they became a single island as at present. A port and settlement were formed on its flat part, and Tonaki Village is made up of this together with the uninhabited island of Irisuna to the northwest. Historically it was once called "Tonashijima" (from population statistics by the Kagoshima Domain around Meiji 3).
