Overview
A district with no fixed house style, and lately one that works with outside designers rather than tradition.
About this place
Hizen Yoshida-yaki is porcelain fired in Ureshino, Saga Prefecture, continuing since the Edo period. Legend says production began in the Sengoku period, but this is denied today. From excavation results, the start of production is estimated at the 1650s to 1660s. From the Kyowa era it fired mainly daily household utensils such as tableware and prospered. But in the Tenpo era, overproduction caused unit prices to fall, putting it in difficulty. The raw material of Yoshida-yaki is Amakusa pottery stone, which was unloaded at nearby Shioda-tsu.
