Overview
Cotton rugs knotted one stitch at a time as domain tribute; the craft lapsed and was reconstructed.
About this place
Nabeshima dantsu is a woven rug that originated in Saga. Together with Ako dantsu of Hyogo Prefecture and Sakai dantsu of Osaka Prefecture, it is regarded as one of Japan's Three Great Dantsu. In the early Edo period, Koga Seiemon, born to a farming family in Ogimachi, Saga District, learned the technique of dantsu from a Chinese person in Nagasaki and wove it as "Ogimachi mosen," said to be the origin of "Nabeshima dantsu," Japan's oldest cotton dantsu. Because Ogimachi mosen was finely made and rich in pictorial charm, Nabeshima Tsunashige, the third lord of the Saga domain, encouraged its production and made it an official product.
